Bacolod City – Agriculture Undersecretary Segfredo Serrano has welcomed the statement of support by more than 700 farmers for the approval and propagation of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) eggplant nationwide during a recent forum held in Iloilo City.

Serrano received the statement of support from Edwin Y. Paraluman, chairman of the Philippine Farmers Advisory Board (FAB) and a longtime supporter of the genetically-modified (GM) crops, during the “Forum on the Global Alliance for Agri-biotech (GAABT) Model on Low-level Presence and GM and Organic Farming Co-existence” held on September 30, 2015 at the Iloilo Convention Center.

The declaration was signed by 700 Filipino farmers, scientists and other agriculture stakeholders from Pangasinan, Laguna, Batangas, Quezon, Camarines Sur, Isabela, Cagayan de Oro, and other provinces in Mindanao.

Paraluman said the farmers signed the declarations after learning about the science, safety, and potential benefits of the said crop from University of the Philippines (UP) scientists, regulators, and farmers already using GM corn.

Serrano recognized the farmers and stakeholders’ sentiments and said “I would also hope that there will come a day when we don’t need exhaustive resources to get a petition for government to appreciate, and to remind us to push a particular issue that is a legitimate right of our farmers and our stakeholders.”
